Black Friday Gun Sales Spike To Record High

Gun bargains were apparently a big draw on Black Friday. The F.B.I. was busy processing about two firearm background checks per second. Black Friday ended up being a record day for gun sales, and in Florida more background checks were requested on Black Friday than any other day this year.

The FBI said a record-setting number of gun background checks were processed this Black Friday, a possible indicator of higher firearm sales.

This year the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) processed 185,713 transactions the day after Thanksgiving, FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer Jr. told NBC News. That breaks the FBI’s forecast of approximately 180,000 and the previous record of 185,345, an increase of .2 percent, set during last year’s Black Friday.

The day is the kick start to the holiday shopping season when retailers are trying to outdo each other with special deals to lure in shoppers. This year saw also a record $3 billion in overall gun sales online.

Background checks are required to purchase firearms from federally licensed dealers. In Florida, more than 8,000 background checks were processed Black Friday, but since about 40 percent of all gun sales are through unlicensed sellers, that figure probably underestimated how many firearms actually changed hands, said Jon Vernick, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research.

Some say mass shootings, like the one in California, are leading to the increase in firearm purchases. Valentine Zehel already owns two guns, but is looking to buy more, “Good for safety, home defense. It’s a big market for it,” Zehel said. WESH 2, a news station in Florida,  asked how sales have increased over the past year, “Roughly 15-20 percent, and it’s just going to go up because people are afraid,” said Luis Lugo, manager at Instant Replay Gun & Pawn in Orlando. Lugo believes the recent spike in gun sales nationwide has much to do with people feeling scared. “With everything going on, with shootings and terrorist attacks, people are afraid,” Lugo said.

The record number of background checks came on the same day three people were killed and nine were wounded in a shooting at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado. In October of last year, a gunman killed 10 people and wounded seven at an Oregon college. “Everybody’s afraid and everybody wants to protect themselves,” Lugo said. With the amount of background checks being processed on Black Friday, Lugo expects those numbers to go up even more once the holidays grow closer.

In 2015, record numbers of background checks have been reported month after month. In October, 2015, over 1.9 million background checks were processed. That month, stocks for two major gun manufacturers soared after President Barack Obama called for tougher gun laws in the wake of a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, The Guardian reported.

In the past, the background-checks system has failed to prevent gun purchases by people who later went on to commit mass shootings. In July, the F.B.I. acknowledged that a breakdown in the system had not caught Dylann Roof, who later shot and killed nine people at a black church in South Carolina.

Though the system was flawed the F.B.I. stated that they have fixed the breakdown and everything is running smoothly again. So whether you are buying a gun because hunting season just started up again or because you want to feel safe, apparently Black Friday is a good day to purchase one or two. Maybe even two for the price of one.
