Blackpink in Your Area: the Story of Blackpink

Blackpink is a South Korean K-pop girl group comprised of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. Blackpink was formed by YG Entertainment, a quite well-known music label in South Korea, on August 8th, 2016. Since their formation in 2016, Blackpink has become a monolith in the K-Pop genre; they have quite literally become divas.

Blackpink debuted with their single, “Square One.” This single contained two songs, “Boombayah” and “Whistle.” Square One steadily skyrocketed Blackpink into the spotlight, with Whistle becoming the number one song in South Korea at the time and “Boombayah” becoming their first number one hit on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. “Boombayah” also soon became the most-viewed debut music video by a Korean group. From there on out, the name Blackpink would become well-known throughout the world. Blackpink soon followed up “Square One” with their second single-album, “Square Two,” which would go on to earn them a place on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, a momentous achievement, as they were the first Korean girl group to ever achieve a place on the Canadian Billboard.

In 2018, the girls would expand their reach with their single, “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” which would be the first song by a Korean girl group, having once again been the first to enter the UK Singles Chart. The single then also won certification in the United States, and the music video for it became the first video by a Korean girl group to surpass one and two billion views on YouTube.

Blackpink has, since then, broken many records, such as breaking the record for the best-selling female album of all time in South Korea twice, with their first album “The Album” in 2020 and “Pink Venom” in 2022. Furthermore, all four girls have also released their own solo music, which has done extremely well, further cementing their legend. Blackpink are no strangers to breaking records, but during their Born Pink World Tour 2022-2023, they achieved the record for the highest grossing concert tour by a female group, which is a huge achievement. Blackpink also has the most subscribed and viewed music artist channel on YouTube, with a total of 91.5 million subscribers and 33 billion views.

Since their debut, Blackpink has been in the K-pop spotlight, and they will, without a doubt, continue to be for many years to come. Blackpink’s versatility and talent as a group is one such factor that helps them greatly, compared with their excellent live shows; they are truly here to stay.
