For many when springtime arrives, that means it is time for spring cleaning. Spring cleaning consists of tackling the least favored chores such as washing baseboards, ceilings, and window sills. However, what started such a tradition?

“Spring cleaning is a tradition my family does every year,” says Mia Baker.

Spring cleaning, in Judeo-Christian traditions, goes as far back to the freeing of Israelites from Egypt. This tradition was to prepare for the holiday of Passover. As in the Torah, it commands not a crumb of leaven in the house. Therefore, those who follow the Torah would intently clean their home. Also, in Buddhist traditions, people should pour water over one another to wash away both bad thoughts and behaviors. Following this, they would also deeply cleanse their homes to purify these spaces as well. Although spring cleaning does often come from traditions, there are also psychological benefits. Many partake in spring cleaning as it can provide the feeling of a “fresh start effect” along with an improved mood and reduced stress.

“Spring cleaning is a definite must every year for me,” said Devin Villarreal.
