Why fast fashion? Yes, the clothes look stunning and are cheap. But, do we ever think about how they are made? Or who makes the clothes that we wear to this day?
“Fast Fashion is not free. Someone, somewhere is paying the price.” -Lucy Siegle states. Which is true, fast fashion isn’t free. There are thousands of people working in poor conditions to make these clothes. They also make these clothes that tend to end up in the trash or being burnt later on. They work so hard, only for the clothes that they make to be thrown away.
All the clothes that these people use to make the fast fashion clothes are usually grown on a farm and then packed away to be taken to factories all over the world. These fabrics are then exposed to all sorts of chemicals. And once these clothes are shipped back over to the U.S., and put into the stores we shop at. It’s basically contaminating the places we shop at. And when we do buy these clothes, only 15% of it is bought. Then the rest of it is taken to be burnt on a different country, polluting the air. “
Next to oil, fashion in its broadest sense, fast fashion, to leather to denim, is the next biggest industrial polluter of the world’s waterways.” -Filmmaker Mark Angelo. We care too much about fast fashion. We care so much that we don’t even bother to think about what type of bad things are put into our clothes. As soon as those clothes hit our skin, tons of chemicals are released into our skin, which then go into our blood cells. Which will cause all sorts of problems.
But what happens to people who work in the factories to make these clothes? Aren’t they bringing home chemicals to their families? They basically breathe in these chemicals everyday just to make us clothes out of cheap materials. They don’t deserve that. They also don’t get paid the way they should be being paid. They work really hard, only to be paid less and breathing in chemicals that can cause cancer.
We should just start shopping at stores that actually care about our well being. We don’t want clothes that are gonna get us sick. Or worse, lead us to death. And the people who make our clothes shouldn’t be treated the way they currently are being treated. Maybe we should consider shopping at thrift stores for clothes. The decision we make tomorrow matters.
