On Sunday, September 8, it was announced that the Compton-born rapper, Kendrick Lamar, would be headlining the biggest American sports event, the Superbowl Halftime Show.
Lamar, since his first label record in 2010, Overly Dedicated, has made headway in the rap game for his amazing writing ability, mostly focusing on societal issues from having grown up in a gang-infested area like Compton; thus, his music is defined as ‘conscious rap.’ Lamar looks forward to bringing his music, more specifically rap music, to an event as big and as influential as the Superbowl. Lamar has found a recent surge in his popularity ever since his diss-track on Drake dropped, entitled “Not Like Us,” a song that shows just how excellent and well-educated he is, having graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA. Additionally, Lamar is the only rapper to have won a Pulitzer Prize for his music—one of the biggest awards a writer can get. There’s no doubt that Lamar’s performance will be talked about for years to come, as he’s put on many amazing shows.
