“I Don’t Know How to Explain It” was released by the American punk/emo band Michael Cera Palin on February 2, 2018, through Chatterbot Records.
This EP was their second ever EP and for a while was the last thing the band had published before their freshman album, “We Could Be Brave,” was released last week. This EP has a lot to love about it, whether it be the stripped production or the meaningful lyrics. The standout track of this album, a cover of the 1996 song “If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow, helped blow the band up in the emo and punk scene.
All five tracks found on this album are perfect in their own right, as it has enough of a unique sound to separate the band from other emo/punk artists. Songs like the intro track, “Portrait of a Woman on a Couch With Cats,” feature classic tapping riffs that are found in fifth wave emo songs. The singer, Elliot Brabatt, has extremely good vocals as well as good writing skills when it comes to guitar.
Like said previously, there truly is a lot of stuff to like about this EP, as it’s extremely solid for something of its production. The blend of emo and punk on this EP makes it have a unique sound, as you have emo riffs but with more of a punk feel to them, a compliment to the band’s playing.
Overall, “I Don’t Know How to Say It” is a solid EP, and it deserves the love that it gets, and the band as a whole deserves all the love they get. I give this EP a 3/5.
