The Rise and Fall of Piracy
Piracy has been around since the dawn of movies, people always want something for free that other have to pay for. The term piracy basically means stealing something that you would usually pay for legally, but instead using illegal methods and taking it for yourself. Piracy can involve anything in today’s time, most “pirates” go after music, video games, and sometimes movies, so that they don’t have to pay to watch a movie, play a game, or listen to music.
Piracy is very illegal, and it ends up destroying companies alike. Companies know about piracy, but there is really nothing they can do to stop it. Piracy can hurt the sales of Music Company who just put out a new album on iTunes for example. Since the world is so immersed in the internet some high up people know how to get past these pay walls to access the content, or music for. After these people get their hands on the content they share it with the whole world for free. This is very illegal because it is basically reselling another person content, while the pirates are doing this, the company losses a large percent of the revenue they would have received.
This is very illegal, but what can be done? The internet is like the Wild West everything is illegal, but the chances of getting caught are like the chances of winning the lottery. There are people out there who dedicate themselves and their time for people out there to play video games and watch movies for free. Piracy is not so much as a crime (even though it is) because if it was many people would be fined or arrested. Basically getting something on the internet for free that should have been paid for is illegal.
The latest video games today are still being pirated, and the companies putting out these games know that there will always be people who cheat, and get the game for free. Piracy has been getting out of hand lately, but now companies such as Apple are taking step to stop piracy of some of the music on their service. You can’t stop piracy and the content creators know this. The only thing that can be done to help slow the piracy is to stop the distribution method of the pirated material. Steps such as this involve police raids on servers in foreign countries hidden away with thousands of Terabytes of movies, music, and video games.
