Cross-Platform Play
Anytime any big console is released mainly by Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo there is always an argument to what console is superior, and which one to purchase. When the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 came out people chose what console they were going to upgrade too, and usually their friends would buy the same console so that they could play together. There has always been a gap amongst all the console and PC gamers. The gap is that everyone is separated; Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4 users cannot play with others of different consoles or machines. There has always been an attempt to bring everyone together so that everyone can play together no matter what system they have.
Games such as Rocket League are trying to bridge the gap. The game publishers along with the help of the Microsoft and Xbox team are trying to allow for Windows 10 users and Xbox One users to play Rocket League together. If the game does accomplish what it is setting out to do, it would revolutionize gaming. Rocket League is not that intense or complicated of a game so their goal may be completed very quickly and with ease. Even though Microsoft is in tight competition with Sony they sent them an invitation to get in on the bridging of the gaming systems.
Since Microsoft owns both the PC gaming market and Xbox One market the branching of the two systems will be a short task. The Xbox One runs a modified version of Windows 10, and most gaming PC’s run Windows 10 so all Microsoft and Xbox have to do know is figure out how to put the pieces together.
The bridging of all the systems is very beneficial to the community and would encourage gamers to buy whatever they feel is the best and not what their friends or hardware specifications say. The one bad thing of this is that if console become connected together it will be a fight over which console is the cheapest, since now they will all will be able to play with each other so there will be no need to get the same system has a friend.
No matter what happens the PC market will still grow, what the Xbox team is trying to accomplish could either hurt or boom the console economy. PC gaming will not be affected though because people are still switching to PC because of its more powerful hardware.
