Last week, the Consumer Electronics Show took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Some of the biggest companies were there showing off their latest inventions and their visions of the future. The overall themes of CES 2017 were TVs, laptops, projectors, and Amazon Alexa. With CES 2017 coming to a close, let’s take a look at some of the biggest announcements and my top CES picks.

Best TV – LG Wallpaper OLED

I was pretty torn between this and Sony’s OLED for my top CES pick. However, in terms of TVs that make people go “oh wow,” there is really nothing at the show that was comparable to LG’s new signature OLED. It’s not quite as thin as a credit card, but it is no thicker than a couple coins stacked together (2.57mm thick). Due to the extremely thin design, all the components that make a TV a TV are stuffed into a speaker that sits below the television. Plus, it mounts to the wall with magnets and that’s amazing. Measurements aside, it’s a (very expensive) preview of the wall art that TVs will become over the coming years.

Best Laptop – Dell XPS 13 Convertible

The laptops at this year’s CES prove that the downsides to purchasing a 2 – in – 1 PC are virtually nonexistent today. Dell made this point clear when it announced a new 2 – in -1 version of its well received XPS 13 laptop. While the standard XPS 13 has enjoyed a touchscreen option for some time, this convertible model brings utility full circle. Consumers can get the best of both worlds. Plus, the XPS 13 gets a claimed 15 hours of battery life. Try to top that with your tablet.

Best Projector – LG ProBeam

Projectors have always been in the shadows at CES. But for many people, the phone has become the TV, and TVs the relic of an old viewing model. It will be bright, portable projectors like the webOS powered ProBeam HF80J from LG that provides the occasional big screen escapes to a new generation of viewers. No, it can’t compete with the vibrancy of LG’s own “Wallpaper” television, but LG’s 77 – inch OLED can not be picked up and moved to any room where a 100 – plus – inch display is needed for a night of Netflix binging or a game.

Best in Show – Amazon Alexa

There was one word that was said more than anything else at CES this year; Alexa. Amazon’s voice assistant appeared in everything from speakers and robots to refrigerators and cars. While those integrations were not all perfect, Alexa has always been about potential. The potential to be everywhere, control everything, and get anything done. Amazon still has to prove that it can hold it all together, but at the start of 2017, Alexa has more potential than ever to excite the world and delight us. Now that it is everywhere, it’s time to see just how much it can do.
