WWE Elimination Chamber Preview
The second pay-per-view of the new year is upon us, and this time it is in the form of the SmackDown exclusive Elimination Chamber. The theme of this event is a six man elimination match that puts all competitors in a huge chamber until there is only one man standing. There looks to be some exciting matchups set up for the SmackDown roster, so hopefully they’ll be able to carry momentum all the way through Wrestlemania season.
Starting with the undercard, Alexa Bliss will defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Naomi. This feud hasn’t been the best, but it hasn’t been the worst either. Both women are great performers and they deserve to be atop the women’s division. The challenger has looked quite strong over the champion in recent weeks, which would lead one to believe that Bliss will retain here. That would be the smart decision as Bliss has been a great champion since winning the title in December, and if and when she does lose, it should be in a major match against someone like Mickie James or an eventually debuting Asuka.
Another women’s division match will pit two veterans in Nikki Bella and Natalya against one another. These two have been at each other’s throats for months, but honestly, the feud has been quite bland. The whole thing has been built off of Natalya’s jealousy towards Nikki, so it seems more like a Total Divas episode than it does a feud on actual WWE programming. Nonetheless, it expect Nikki Bella to win this one. There have been rumors swirling of her retirement and she may need some momentum on the tail end of her career.
A Tag Team Turmoil match will also take place at Elimination Chamber. American Alpha will defend their SmackDown Tag Team titles against the likes of The Usos, The Ascension, The Vaudevillians, Breezango, and Heath Slater and Rhyno. Although there are only five teams, this should’ve have been an Elimination Chamber match. They could have easily teamed up two midcarders to vie for the titles to make it a full six team Chamber match. That would make so much more sense instead of having just one sole Elimination Chamber match on the card. It’s expected that American Alpha will retain, seeing that they’re the only legitimate threat in the tag division on SmackDown. Another option could potentially be The Usos winning and then American Alpha regaining the titles at Wrestlemania. However, look for Alpha to pick up the win here.
The main event of the evening will be the only Elimination Chamber match on the card. Newly crowned WWE Champion John Cena will defend his title against AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, The Miz, Baron Corbin, and Bray Wyatt. Cena just won his record tying 16th world championship at the Royal Rumble, but him winning the match wouldn’t make much sense in this one. If he were to win, he’d likely face Royal Rumble winner Randy Orton in the main event of Wrestlemania. That match has happened countless times since both men entered the WWE in 2002, and nobody wants to see that matchup again. The two most likely winners of this match are Bray Wyatt and AJ Styles. AJ Styles vs Randy Orton would make a pretty solid matchup at Wrestlemania, but it seems like the company will have Wyatt win the match and have the Wyatt Family (Orton and Wyatt) breakup and battle for the WWE title. This decision might not be the best because then it leave Styles, who had the best run in recent memory during 2016, with not much to do at Wrestlemania. That may also leave John Cena directionless, perhaps taking him to the undercard for Wrestlemania.
Wrestlemania season is extremely unpredictable this year. This makes the fans both interested and scared. They hope that the WWE makes the right decision for the biggest show of the year, and hopefully they can hit the nail on the head this time around.
