Star Wars Theory: What is Rey’s Backstory?
A question that has been stirring ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters in December 2015 is “Who exactly is Rey’s father?” Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) was one of the three main characters that were introduced to Star Wars universe as the first movie of the new trilogy was released. But unlike her cohorts Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaacs), Rey’s past is clouded with mystery. All fans know about her is that she was a scavenger on the planet Jakku when she first encountered both Finn and BB-8. Outside of that, fans have been dying to know if she is somehow related to a former character in the storied movie franchise. This especially became true when it was revealed that Rey was force sensitive. There are many options as to what her origins are, and we’re going to dive right into a few.
The most obvious and popular of the theories is that Rey is indeed a Skywalker. More specifically, she may be the daughter of Luke himself. This appears to be a fitting choice because the series has been centered around the Skywalker/Solo families from the get-go, so it does make sense. Plus, the Skywalker family lightsaber was calling to her, so add another reason that this theory may be true. This theory would be even more interesting because the one that she battled and defeated, Kylo Ren, would be her cousin. That leads right into another theory. Some people believe that Rey may be the daughter of Han Solo and Princess Leia. As interesting as this may be, it seems unlikely. Rey has already spent time with both Han and Leia, so wouldn’t it have made sense for Leia to tell her that they were her parents?
Continuing with a bloodline theory, many fans have come up with the notion that Rey could potentially be a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan was Luke’s mentor in the original trilogy, so this would also make for a very interesting backstory to Rey’s character. There would need to be a bit more backstory to this one explained, but there is nothing wrong with that. Especially with there being talks of a Kenobi anthology film in the works.
The final theory, and a personal favorite, is that Rey has no famous family ties at all. This backstory would start when Luke was attempting to groom the next generation of Jedi in the Jedi Temple. All would go wrong when one of Luke’s students, Ben Solo (aka Kylo Ren), turned on his uncle/Jedi Master by destroying the temple and killing all of the other students in the school. Or so we thought. Perhaps Luke was able to save one of his padawans, that being Rey, and he took her to Jakku where she would be safe from harm. There are also flashbacks that Rey sees that depict Luke placing a hand on RD-D2 in what seems to be a flaming land of destruction. That very well could be the destroyed Jedi Temple. The other flashback shows a young Rey being left on Jakku with a ship flying away from her. Perhaps that could be Luke leaving her there for safety.
It is likely that Star Wars fans will learn more about Rey in the upcoming film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Until then, fans are left to speculate on what exactly the backstory of Rey really is.
