“GUTS” is the second studio album by American songstress Olivia Rodrigo. It was released on September 8th, 2023 through Geffen Records. It’s the follow up to the star’s massive debut record “SOUR” and was proceeded by two singles; “vampire” and “bad idea right?”. The album is projected to become the best selling album in both the US and around the world for the week ending September 23rd, 2023.
Olivia Rodrigo is back and here to stay! “GUTS” is her second album release; after her last album “SOUR” in 2021. This record is definitely the perfect sequel. Listening to this album, it felt like Rodrigo just took her work with the latter album and polished it up. When compared, the first album’s opener “brutal” falls so short compared to “GUTS”‘ “all-american b****”. Both of these tracks are fun pop-punk songs but the aforementioned track just beats “brutal” by a long shot. The only thing that “SOUR” overtakes with this record are the ballads. “the grudge” and “pretty isn’t pretty”, both highlight tracks, are incredible ballads, but abstain to the former album’s ballads. As someone who prefers music production over lyrical values most of the time, “SOUR” just takes the cake. But enough with the comparing now. This record is great all around and one thing about Ms. Rodrigo is that her music only gets better with time. Even the album’s singles weren’t great on their first listen but with more and more time, they only got better. “GUTS” was also released just in time for Grammy season! She will for sure secure some nominations.
Overall, “GUTS” is a great solid record. Like mentioned in the previous paragraph, this album will get better with time. Olivia Rodrigo never disappoints at the end of the day and the first three tracks from this record are for sure the best on both the album and arguably of her career.
