On September 8th, Laufey, the Icelandic jazz pop singer-songwriter, released her second studio album through AWAL, entitled “Bewitched.” It is composed of 14 tracks, each masterfully crafted. “Bewitched” captures Laufey’s enchanting vocals and her skills as a pianist perfectly. The album is an amalgamation of masterful songwriting and superb instrumentation—a modern jazz hit.
Laufey proves herself once again as the reviver of a genre thought to have been gone from the mainstream: jazz. “Bewitched” was sure to be a hit, Laufey having proved herself with her first studio album, “Everything I Know About Love,” and having won the Best New Artist in Jazz and Blues at the Icelandic Music Awards for said album. Furthermore, even more hype was built up after the single “From the Start” blew up on TikTok, rocketing Laufey into further fame—fame well deserved. “Bewitched” takes the listener through a magical journey, one on which the listener wishes not to return.
“Bewitched” is an album that is a front-to-back listen, with the intro, “Dreamer,” easing the listener in with a catchy jazz tune, and then the outro track, “Bewitched,” which is a melodic and a little bittersweet tune about falling in love for the first time. It’s not very often that a single artist revives a genre; however, after listening to this album, the listener can tell very well that jazz has truly been revived. Laufey has an extremely bright future ahead of her, as she is only 24 years old and has just begun her musical career, having started publishing songs in early 2020.
Overall, “Bewitched” by Laufey is an extremely memorable album that will, without a doubt, win many rewards, perhaps even a Grammy, in the coming time. For extra reading about “Bewitched,” you may go to the album’s Wikipedia page here.
