“Eternal Sunshine” is the most recent studio album from Ariana Grande. Released last Friday, March 8th, it’s the seventh record put out by the singer. The album title comes from the 2004 film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” starring Grande’s favorite actor, Jim Carrey. It was preceded by its lead single “yes, and?” with the second single “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” coming alongside the album’s release.
The album features 13 songs that range from dance pop hits to chill R&B rhythms. Some highlights of this album include “bye”, “supernatural”, and “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)”. All three of these were produced by the legendary Max Martin, who is arguably one of the best pop producers in history. “Eternal Sunshine” is her first album following her divorce from her ex-husband. As you can imagine, the main topic of this record centers around love. “yes, and?” is a song about not caring about the words of other people and doing what you want and please. Its second single focuses on her breakup and the music video even recreates a scene from the movie the album is named after. The overall songwriting on this album is pretty good and you could even say it goes through all five stages of grief from a breakup. Production wise, this album finds itself as Grande’s strongest. It sounds expensive and you’ll easily find yourself humming the melodies in your head and especially on songs like “the boy is mine” and its title track. We don’t even need to talk about vocals because it’s Ariana Grande. Of course it’s going to be great!
Overall, “Eternal Sunshine” is such a fun listen. It’s catchy, it’s entrancing, and if you recently went through or are going through a breakup, this is the album for you. It’s plausibly her best effort since 2016’s “Dangerous Woman” and can potentially compete with her biggest albums in terms of success. “supernatural” is the best song with no questions asked.
