The Torrance, California, indie rock band Joyce Manor released their junior album, “Never Hungover Again,” on July 22, 2014, shortly after their signing with Epitaph Records. “Never Hungover Again” was their first album to reach the Billboard 200s, which it greatly deserved, as I would consider this album an excellent addition to Joyce Manor’s flawless discography.
“Never Hungover Again” was the first album of Joyce Manor’s I listened to, and I still remember the magical feeling I had as I played it and heard the intro, titled “Christmas Card,” which has this infectious sort of warm pop-punk sound. Hearing Barry Johnson’s vocals mixed with the intimate lyrics of “Christmas Card” made me realize how magical of a band Joyce Manor is. “Christmas Card” was an excellent intro as it set the tone for the rest of the album, which is sort of more poppier and warmer punk.
One of my favorite tracks, which also happens to be one of my favorite Joyce Manor songs from this already perfect album, is Catalina Fight Song, which is the 9th track on this album and the shortest song on the album, clocking in at only 1 minute and 5 seconds. “Catalina Fight Song” is one of those songs that, as soon as you listen to it, you instantly realize that it’s going to be on constant play for the next couple weeks.
While this album only clocks in at a short 19 minutes with 10 tracks, it left a lasting impact on me. As to me, the production on this album, combined with Barry’s poetic lyrics, really made the songs memorable to me. I would recommend this album to anyone who’s looking for a short album that is utterly perfect from beginning to end. I give this album a perfect 10/10. For more Joyce Manor content, specifically relating to this album, I would recommend watching their live performance of “Falling in Love Again” at the Hollywood Palladium here.
