On February 3, 2015, the Pennsylvanian hardcore band, Title Fight, released their third and final album, “Hyperview,” through Anti- Records. The album was released to mixed reviews due to the band’s complete sound redirection on this album to entirely shoegaze.
Unlike their previous album, “Hyperview” was entirely laid-back shoegaze with soft, distant vocals to complement the peaceful shoegaze sound. I’ll be completely honest, on my first listen I was not a fan of the laid-back shoegaze sound as I didn’t care particularly for their shoegaze tracks on 2013’s Floral Green and 2011’s Shed; however, this album has recently made its place in my heart. Songs like “Mhrac” and “Hypernight” have made a connection to me personally lately, so I’m now starting to come to love this album.
Just like their previous albums, the lyrics on this album are of more abstract ideas to relate to a variety of people, and it is that exact lyric writing that makes this album so great. Shoegaze fits Title Fight’s lyrics really well, as their previous anger-filled albums lead to this album, which is mellow, almost like it’s the after-state of said anger from those albums.
“Hyperview” has a very mature sound for Title Fight, which fits them a lot as they had been a band since high school, and this album was released in their 12th year as a band, which is what I love about Title Fight. Title Fight hasn’t got one bad song—their discography is almost like a look at their maturity, and the hiatus of the band is almost like a reminder that we’re all mortal and we’ll eventually not be here any longer.
In conclusion, “Hyperview” serves as a perfect end to this special band that helped shape the modern hardcore scene. I give “Hyperview” by Title Fight a 5/5.
