SADD Students Qualify for State Competition
Students from the SADD Organization competed in the annual driving competition at the North Franklin Township Fire Hall on March 23.
Katrina Schmolke, Isaac Dean, Jamie Lawrence, and Aaron Mylan competed in the event. The team finished finished first in overall points, while Mylan and Lawrence finished first and second respectively in the individual competition.
The competition consisted of three parts. A driving course that was held in the parking lot of the fire hall where the drivers put their precision driving to the test. The next portion was a perceptual test. The participants were shown a slide of a situation on the road for five seconds, then they had to answer three true or false questions about the slide. The final portion was a written test that consisted of 45 questions about laws and procedures.
All three of the scores were totaled together to get a final score, and Mylan and Lawrence were on top of the leaderboards when it was all said and done. Mylan came home with the first prize of $500 and Lawrence came home with $250. Each of them qualified for the state competition on May 9.
“I’m really excited to go to states,” explained Mylan, the first place winner. “When we went to the IU 1 regional competition, I didn’t really know what to expect. But I was glad I came out on top, and I’m going to try my hardest to do well at states.”
Lawrence, the second place winner, said, “This competition should really be interesting. There will be a lot of different kids from all over the state, and it will be intriguing to see how we can compete with them.”
The SADD sponsor, Mr. Corbett, Mylan, and Lawrence will travel to the state competition in May. They will compete in similar events and see if they can hold up with the state’s best in hope to win scholarships up to a $3,000 value.
