Every year students across the nation attend their high school prom. Prom is a time to create ever lasting memories with your friends. However, is it really worth making those memories? Students have to invest in very expensive high class clothing for each dance, and there are usually two dances per year. Not only do students have to invest in that, they have to buy tickets, flowers and will sometimes have to pay a large fee for transportation.

Senior, Kedar Davis said, “I believe that prom is worth it. It’s a time to be with your friends, and you never know how much time you have left with them. Prom is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it provides great memories.”

With all of these expenses for a dance, surely it can benefit something else. According to internet sources the average male student’s family spends nearly $1,000 on a high school formal. Therefore, over four years that is about $4,000. This amount of money can be used for so many different things, such as expenses for college, a decent car or it can be put away in a bank.

Junior, Camden Maskil said, “Formals really aren’t worth it. The memories made are pointless because I will see the majority of these people again. It just doesn’t make sense to me to spend so much money on something for no reason.”

After all this is really an opinion question. It depends on how some students feel about the dance. Some students enjoy the memories created from the prom, others not so much. With money being such a large factor, students have lost sight of what prom is all about. In conclusion prom really is becoming “not worth it” until money is no longer a factor it will then become worth it, again.
