On Friday October 14th, students from Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School learned with fireman Trystan Weir what to do in case of a fire when at home. The elementary students learned what to do on the elementary school’s annual fire prevention day. The annual fire prevention day is organized by both Jefferson and Waynesburg firefighters.

During the fire prevention day all students had their chance to crawl through a simulator called the “smoke house”, which is a fire safety trailer that gets filled with a thick vapor. The thick vapor is to stimulate smoke that would fill a house if it were on fire. Firefighter Trystan Weir taught the students how to crawl through smoke if there were ever a fire.

Some of the students got a little panicked during the simulator. The assistant fire chief for Jefferson said that those moments of panic are exactly why it is important for kids to practice knowing what to do if there is a real fire. The simulator helps the children practice how to get out of a house if it were ever on fire. After the children went through the simulator they were able to sit in the fire trucks. They also met Smokey Bear, the national mascot for forest fire prevention.
