Faraday Chemistry Field Trip

On Wednesday, November 30th, students in Mrs. Pierce’s chemistry class and students in Mr. Pratt’s honors chemistry class took a field trip to Soldiers & Sailors Museum for a chance to experience some chemistry in action right in front of them.

The students all were seated in the auditorium of the building along with many surrounding school districts from several counties nearby. There was a host who performed several experiments showing students how unique and strange and even cool chemistry can be. The host was visible to the entire room but there was also a live feed of the demonstrations being projected onto a large screen high above the stage. This made it so students who weren’t exactly close to the stage could get a bird’s eye view of the experiments.

The host mixed together some liquids and showed them how they can drastically change colors in literally a heartbeat. The method he used was a slow, funny saying in which he made it seem as though he magically changed the color. In reality, the method is just timing and well, chemistry! He timed how long it would take in his head for the liquid to change color. To the students, this all seemed like magic happening before their eyes.

After the little ceremony, students took a group picture and boarded the bus again. They then were taken to Canonsburg where they got to eat at a restaurant of their choosing, before going back to the school.

“It was interesting to see all of the different demonstrations they showed” said Evan O’Neal, Chemistry 1 student.

The trip went well and the students enjoyed it. The demonstrations shown were also very educational as well as the information the host gave along with his performances. This is a yearly trip so students who take chemistry next year will most likely be going on this trip.
