Taking your First Foot into the New Year!
A family usually wants good luck for the rest of the year around their house, so they do a tradition. Everyone knows the common tradition, the midnight kiss, which is what you do at midnight, but have they ever heard of the First Footing?
The First Footing is a tradition where a dark-haired male must walk first into someone’s house on New Year’s Day. Every house they walk into is filled with good luck. This tradition was made in Scotland as well as the other tradition they have made. The tradition was made back in the 8th and 9th centuries with Vikings. If you were a redhead or light-haired male are considered a harbinger of ill fate. When you are the dark-haired male you would arrive bearing gifts to bring good fortune and health to the home.
The First Footing is a common tradition some people will know, but it is a fun way to start the new year!
