Everyone watches the ball drop, but do you know the history behind it?
It all started in New York City’s Times Square back in 1907. The idea was to attract people to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. The first ball was made out of iron and wood with 100 light bulbs attached. As the clock struck midnight, it was lowered down the flagpole, marking the beginning of the new year. Since then, the tradition has evolved, and now the ball is made of Waterford crystal and weighs about 11,875 pounds! It’s quite a sight to see as it lowers down the pole, lighting a beautiful glow and signaling the start of a fresh year.
