A heart is a very well known symbol used for Valentine’s Day. The heart comes from a plant that is now extinct called a Silphium. This plant was key component in a love potion during the time of the Romans, which is why it is the most associated symbol in February and for Valentine’s Day. Another theory of why it is the lead symbol is because St. Valentine used the heart to symbolize a secret marriage.
The heart, although not looking like the one in our bodies, is associated with love because it pumps the blood in our bodies to keep us living. This symbolizes that the significant other in your life is the one keeping your heart beating, which is not true, but is a very cute way of showing how much someone or something means to you. The heart is a major part of Valentine’s Day and it expresses what or who your heart beats for.
With all this being said, the heart has a very important significance to the holiday as it represent love.
