Valentine’s is known for the holiday of showing your love to someone you deeply care about. Be it romantically or just to show someone that you care. But what is the real origin behind it? To be honest, no one knows the complete story. However, there are many origins associated with the holiday to give a hint towards the origin of it.
To begin, Valentine’s Day actually started off as a Christian tradition. It was supposed to be a feast honoring a martyr (someone who died from persecution for not stating their beliefs) named Saint Valentine. But this tradition eventually led to different stories as to what happened. The stories then made it a national holiday to celebrate love as well as cultural beliefs.
The main story was that Saint Valentine was imprisoned for ministering to Christians who were being persecuted by the Romans at the time. But while he spent time in jail it is said that he had restored the sight of the jailer’s blind daughter. Before he was executed he wrote a letter to the jailer’s once blind daughter and signed “Your Valentine”. People see it as an act of love.
In addition to that, it was believed that he had helped marry Christian couples who could not marry regularly because of the Roman Empire. The only reason Roman’s did not get along with the Christians is because they did not have the same beliefs. They wanted them to give all their faith and humanity to their emperor rather than God. A lot of them had refused and for that, they would be killed. So for Saint Valentine to risk his life for the sake of other people’s love, that itself is an act of love.
In conclusion, there is no real proof of any of this actually happening. They are just stories that arose somewhere, but many people do believe it to be true. Whether the stories are true or not, it is still seen as an act of love and many people want to and get to spread it on the annual holiday. It is a day that gives us a chance to give back to others like Saint Valentine did.For more info: Saint Valentine
