Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, in which you pray and fast for a 40 day period.
You also get to give up something in the mean time to grow closer to God. On that Wednesday people went to a church and had the sign of the cross marked on their heads with ashes. Which marks the holy day. And marks the beginning of Lent. Lent ends on the holiday Holy Thursday. Which commemorates the day of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Many people of all sorts of churches participate in this holiday. When we get marked with ashes it is a symbol of repentance, mortality, and the need for forgiveness.
This holiday marks a new beginning in a person’s life and mourning their sins. This day marks the beginning of Lent and it begins at midnight on Ash Wednesday. These holidays have been around for centuries, and will continue to be around for years to come.
