When we hear about Halloween, we think of candy and dressing up in scary outfits. But what is the real meaning of Halloween?
Halloween falls on every October 31st. This was a tradition that originated back in ancient Celtic times at a festival in Samhain. At this festival people would light bonfires and wear scary costumes to scare off any ghosts that were nearby. There were lots of ways to describe Halloween. Hallows Eve being one of them and All Saints Day. These names were picked out during the 18th century by Pope Gregory III. These names were describing the different times during the day. All Saints Day begins in the morning. Hallows Eve begins in the afternoon. And Halloween Begins later at night. But now we celebrate Halloween by doing all kinds of fun stuff. Halloween was a celebration for the Celtic people. It was like New Years to them. It had marked the end of summer and it was time for the dark cold season to approach. And when this dark cold season arrived lots of people died. And they said that on All Hallows Eve, the dead would come back and haunt the townspeople. In order not to be haunted, Celtic would burn crops and some of their animals as a sacrifice. This is where the costume part would come in. They would dress up while sacrificing their stuff. The masks that they would wear would be made out of their own animal fur or heads.
