Safety for our Students
Metal detectors can help to keep weapons and anything harmful from getting into a building or facility. Many high schools across the country have them and are putting them into their schools. They are trying to ensure their student’s and staff’s safety..
Metal detectors at Jefferson-Morgan would be very beneficial to the student’s and staff’s safety and learning experience. The metal detectors would help to cut down on school violence and keep any tragedies from occuring at the school.
After 9/11 security cracked down on airport almost immediately. However schools with hundreds if not thousands of kids inside can enter by saying they are picking their kid up or that they have a meeting. People can get in the school and are not checked for weapons at all. They could easily lie about whatever they are doing there. How many more young kids and teachers will have to die before something changes?
Earlier this month, Brownsville Area High and Elementary School received a gift from 84 Lumber. The president and owner of the company wrote them a check of over seven thousand dollars to buy and install metal detectors. This was a great act from the community, and very appreciated by the district.
There are many people in the Jefferson-Morgan School District who believe the school does not have any money left to spend on metal detectors. This is because they have been working on renovating the school for the past few years.
Jefferson-Morgan School District should solicit donations from business owners and companies to help pay for this expense. This is a solution to making the school a safer place and to give the kids a better learning experience.
In conclusion, it might be a rather big expense for the district to do this, but it would be well worth it in the end. Do you feel safe as a student in school or as a parent sending your child to school knowing they are at risk?
