On June 23, 2022 at Gunung Leuser National Park, Indonesia a Orangutan by the name of Raku treated his own wound with a medicinal plant that you can find in Southeast Asia. The plant is used for pain and inflammation.
Raku had reportedly chewed up the plant and then proceeded to take it and rub the plant’s juices on his fingers and rub it over his wound. After he rubbed it on the wound on his face, he then tried to cover his wound with it. It was as if he was making his own bandaid.
Scientists claim that they have never recorded a wild animal try to treat themselves this way. They figured he had learned it from other orangutans when he still lived out in the wild, before he was put in captivity.
