We have all heard of GMO and non GMO foods before. Some people prefer non GMO due to the idea of it being unsafe, but is it really unsafe or could it be better for you? Only about 11% of Americans actually eat GMO foods, but why is it such a small percentage? Some say it is a health risk and others do not even know that they exist!
In addition to the last paragraph we know that only about 11% of Americans actually consume GMO foods knowing and willingly. But why only such a small percent? Well according to Pew Research Center, the majority of people think that it can cause health risks and maybe even environmental issues. There is really not too much proof that it is bad for your health, but some are skeptical about scientists motives and do not completely trust what they say and release to the public.
Going against what was said in the last paragraph, there is more proof that it has better health benefits than not. Some examples include reducing risk of disease, increased nutrients, and improved food security. Most Americans are actually uneducated in the idea of GMO foods and may not know that they are even eating it. They are in our everyday foods such as corn, soy beans, cereals, cooking oils, etc.. All of these things are known to increase our nutrients and the public has not had too much trouble with these things before. So it is safe to say that most GMO foods are most likely harmless.
In another article written by Pew Research Center, they say that people with more knowledge about science feel safer eating GMO foods rather than the less knowledgeable. But even people who know more about science are divided, about 48% think it is safe while 47% think that it is unsafe. In all honesty, I believe that most people do not care too much about what they eat. Most people have a list of groceries and ingredients they need for recipes and just grab it without looking at the actual ingredients.
Overall, I am not a big fan of GMO foods. I am not 100% sure that they are safe, but after doing research I found out that they are in our everyday foods. It is a bit hard to avoid, and just like most Americans I did not have a whole lot of knowledge on the topic. I thought that they were only in our fruits and vegetables, but it is much more than that. I am less wary of it now due to the fact that it has been in my everyday food without knowing and I am perfectly fine.
In conclusion, there are many mixed opinions on the subject matter. It is split into three categories, skeptics, unsure, and the more educated. GMO foods are most likely not harmful and provide nutrients for every group of people, whether it be rich or poor. There is no proof of it being harmful, so there is no reason to worry. Continue shopping the way that you do, do not let your uncertainty ruin the facts and data provided. But in the end it is also based on personal opinion, and that is perfectly okay.
