On September 22, 2016 Yahoo had a security breach which was so massive that investigators saying that a record breaking haul of passwords. Yahoo officially came out and said that email addresses, passwords and other information including birth dates but no credit card or bank account numbers were stolen. Yahoo have also said that this is nothing serious to worry about and that they are doing their best to stay on top of this and regain as many accounts as they can.
Over five hundred million accounts were broken into and had their information stolen however that’s where it ends. Usually whenever a massive information breach happens the information is usually stolen and sold on the deep web for money. However this information was just kept and there has been no new information being sold on the deep web. This could mean that this is could be bigger than just a group of hackers trying to get rich, it could be a state sponsored attack because stolen data can be used in crimes such as identity theft. This information is also used by the US government to keep tabs on citizens to make sure that they are not doing or planning any illegal or illicit acts. Investigators are saying that a foreign intelligence agency might combine the Yahoo files with information from other sources to build extensive cases on US government or other officials in secretive positions.
Even though this attack is probably harmless, it is advised that anyone who has a Yahoo account to check and see if they account has been hacked into and if so, it is suggested that user’s head to the support page to try and get their account back.
