Internet Insider – End of the Vine
On October 27, 2016, tragedy has been set upon the internet with an announcement regarding the future of the well known video-sharing service, Vine. This announcement coincided on the same day when Twitter announced that it would lay off over 300 workers. Twitter said that the service will be discontinued “in the coming months” which gives users time to save internet history. Twitter also commented on the future of the service by saying “We think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made.”
Vine is a service that allows users to create and share six second videos. This allows countless users to get famous and even make a living off of this such as but not limited to Andrew Bachelor, Nash Grier and Brittany Furlan. These popular viners must now find other platforms to continue their careers. The main problem with their transition to new sites is popular viners will have to change up their content to continue their Internet fame, and not all fans will agree with this sudden change in content.
This is a desperate attempt by Twitter to cut their losses and return to profit making. It also greatly damages their relationship with their community. This could also lead to a gigantic backlash from the community making the damage that Twitter was previously suffering from that much worse. If backlash from the community occurs, it could potentially lead to the downfall of Twitter and the rise of a new social media platform.
