New Years Resolutions and How to Keep Them

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017. Finally after a heartbreaking year filled with many travesties and losses we are able to start anew. With the new year comes new “resolutions”, we set them every year; to lose weight, to eat healthier, to get more sleep. Every year around January 3 we give up, the resolution becomes a quick laugh and we fall back into unhealthy routines and unreliable health guidelines.

The Jefferson-Morgan students have a few tips to share regarding the way we handle these goals.

Tip #1- Find Inspiration

“My New Year’s Resolution is to ‘Smile More’,” says Mikael S. (grade 8), “my favorite YouTube star, Roman Atwood is the inspiration behind this resolution, and I plan to enjoy the rest of my year before I am slammed with responsibilities freshmen year.”

Tip #2- Set a Habit

I once had a teacher say that it takes nine days for a routine to become a habit, and if we are giving up three or four days after New Years claiming that we have set a resolution that is, “too hard to obtain” then we aren’t even giving ourselves a chance. Wait at least two weeks (14 days) before giving up, this will allow for a habit to form and you may become happier with your results.

Tip #3- It Won’t Be Easy

“I realized the next day that my resolution, to run equally as fast or faster than Mr. Bolt by the end of the year, wasn’t going to be easy. I laughed at myself wondering if I could achieve such an insane goal, it won’t be easy but I am willing to try,” says Teddy R. (grade 8).
