School lunches should be changed and made more more appetizing and healthier because many students do not enjoy them as much as much as they should.

School lunches are not appetizing. The lunches should be made so that children look forward to eating them, but that is not the case.

Adam Tharp stated that he would like to see “real pizza and more types of soup (real soup, not leftover taco meat and beans.) Definitely more fruit, too.” Tharp is also very concerned about the pizza. He said, “The pizza is usually dried out and the cheese is like rubber.”

A student saying this about the food that is being distributed to the students throughout the school is a problem. Not only does one student think this, results show that many think the same way. One solution to solving this is producing tastier and healthier pizza. Even if this means putting frozen pizza in the oven and serving it, at least it will meet students’ expectations. Tharp also mentioned that he would like to see soup in the cafeteria. A soup of the day would be a change and also a great idea. If the cafeteria staff were to chose one type of soup for each day of the week and have it served, students would greatly appreciate it.

“Fruit salads and desserts are two items I would like to see on the menu,” said Nicole Thomas. Tharp also stated that he wished to see more fruit be served. Tharp complained that there are only a few fruit choices offered, but several chip options. Fruit is proven to be healthier so why is there not enough fruit to pick from but there is entirely enough chips to chose from? The solution to this problem would be to add in a fruit bar where students could make their own fruit salads and/or parfaits. Not only are they healthier, but if it is presented in the proper way, most students would be open to the change.

Twenty students were polled “Should school lunches be changed and made to be more appetizing and offer more food choices.”.  All twenty of the students responded back “Yes.” This means that 100% of the students that were polled agreed that the lunches should be changed.

Students reflected their opinions on what foods they would like to see added or taken away from the menu. While most answered with more fruit and less junk, there were a few that stood out. One of the answers were an ice cream and milkshake bar. This would be a great idea, but it should only be presented once a week because if it were any more than that, it would be too much sugar. 30% of the students also said “Chicken patties should be taken away.” This is mainly because most of the chicken patties are not tasty at all. This could be fixed by serving maybe a different type of chicken patties. Overall, though, the majority of the students agreed that there should be more fruit added to the lunchroom.

The resolution to this issue would simply be to add more fruit. Just by giving more fruit as an option to the students would be plenty, but if there was a fruit bar it would be way more appreciated. The next major problem was there being too much unhealthy food being served. This could be easily fixed by taking some of it away. Not all of it should be taken away, but about 25% of it should be. The more sugar that is in a child’s body makes it harder for them to concentrate in the classroom. These are the main problems and just by doing these simple little tasks could easily fix them.
