What is better: midterm test or project?

Although students often find projects as a midterm to be easier, tests may be better. Tests are better depending on the final that may be given in that class. Midterms are a collective review of half of the material that has been learned in the class. If half of the material has already been reviewed, it may make it easier to remember some of the older information when it comes time for finals. Also the benefit of a midterm is that if notes are kept, they are able to be used as a sort of study guide for finals. Most students would agree that projects are just an “easy A,” so when given the choice students may choose them, but how beneficial are they? A project seems very convenient when being crammed with midterms right after coming back from Christmas break, but how about later in the year when information from a midterm could have been helpful on a final. Midterms are also a good way for teachers to really measure if the students have grasped the information that was taught in the first half of the year. Knowing what the students really understand and what they may need work on, will help the teacher when preparing the students for finals and in the classroom in general. Midterm tests may seem inconvenient and hard to students, but they really are beneficial to us when you look at the big scheme of things.
