What elective would you like to see offered- Victoria Conti

In high school we are offered many electives to choose from, but one that should be considered is an elective that is focused on nutrition.

This elective may be a good choice because it could be beneficial when it comes to making students more conscious about their health. “Health class only taught us the basics and wasn’t focused on one particular topic. I feel a class on nutrition would encourage more students to make healthier eating choices, because they would learn the effect that food really has on their body,” says Molly Grandel. Most high schools do have a health class, which teaches only basic knowledge. For students who are more interested in health, a nutrition class would be a great choice.

Among being a good choice for students who are already interested in health, a nutrition elective may cause a student who is uninformed about health to change their lives. Some students may want to change up their eating habits after taking the class. It would teach several lessons that students could carry on and continue to lead healthy lifestyles. Since it is an elective, the students who don’t want to go more in depth than health class, would not have to. It is an optional course that could teach students to be more health-conscious.

“You can always learn ways to be healthier. Some students know a lot about health, others do not know anything. A nutrition elective would enhance the knowledge of some, and open new doors for those who don’t know anything,” says Grandel. This elective could not do harm to the students’ knowledge. It could just encourage them to be healthier.

This is an elective that should be offered at our school. Nutrition will always be an important thing in our lives. Why should we not learn about it at an early age?
