In what ways can social media affect a students reputation? - Molly Grandel

A student’s reputation can be affected negatively by what they post on their social media account.

People’s posts on their social media accounts can affect how they are perceived by others.  If a person has never met someone they have nothing to go off of except what the read about them online. A student who constantly posts about partying, drinking, and smoking may be looked at as trashy.  A student Constantly using foul language, talking smack on others and starting twitter fights can make themselves come across as immature. All of these can contribute to making a person’s reputation looked negatively upon. Victoria Conti says “When I see someone constantly posting about these things I think that they don’t take their future serious and partying is all they do.”

Photos a student may upload to their Twitter or Instagram can affect their reputation as well.  Many people not only tweet about partying many also upload photos.  Photos will be uploaded of students with alcohol in their hands, smoking, and acting inappropriately. Uploading these photos can not only have a negative effect on their reputation but can also get them in a lot of trouble.  Cameron Zeo says “I never got why people post photos partying it does not make them look good.”

All of the 15 students I surveyed said yes when they were asked if they believe that social media affects a student’s reputation.  Emily Ozohonish even made the remark “I don’t get on social media often but I Can definitely see how what people post can affect them negatively. “  People constantly look for flaws in others to bring them down.  This is why the reputations people obtain from social media are most often negative.

Colleges often look at students social Medias before granting them scholarships to their schools don’t let what you post on twitter be the reason you are not granted one. Jobs also commonly look at their employees accounts as well employees don’t want to give their boss a reason to fire them. It is important to realize people are making their judgments on a person through their posts on social media. Every time someone goes to post they need to make sure that it will not affect their reputation in a negative way.
