Literature and Film

For the 2014-2015 school year,  a new class called “Literature and Film” has been added to the curriculum.  Ms. Caffrey will teach the class.

Ms. Caffrey said, “Literature and  Film is a class that I thought students would enjoy because they have the opportunity to read the novel, short story/essay and evaluate the film version of it.”

Ms. Caffrey decided to create a new elective in the hopes of piquing students interest in reading.  “I am interested to find out what students think of film adaptations after they have read the written word first. I am Hoping to use fairy tales, dystopian society, and to offer a unit on Stephen King’s writings and film adaptations. I also want to have a particular unit of study that covers film adaptations of short stories.”

So far, approximately 80 students have signed up to take the course, which will be offered during second semester.

Ms. Caffrey said, “The primary subject that students will be learning about will revolve around reading, writing, listening and speaking, primarily literature. Although, as literature often allows for, planning to discuss historical, philosophical, scientific and social ideas going on during the time period in which the stories were written and the films were created.”

“When I thought of using such a class as an elective, I was going for “the book was better” argument,” said Ms. Caffrey.
