JM students place 2nd place at STEM competition

Congratulations are in order for the five teammates who attended the 2015 Governor’s  Regional STEM competition held at Penn State Fayette.  The team was challenged to design and build a device to improve the quality of life for Pennsylvanians.  Teams were provided with a $500 stipend to create their device. The device the team came up with was the “Thera Slip”.

Members of the team areConnor Alcorn, Emily Babinski, Fred Clark, Alex Flenniken and Shelby Rosinsky. Jefferson Morgan placed 2nd,  winning $1,000 college scholarship and additional $500 if they attend a PASSHE school.

Fred Clark stated, “Students on the team prepared for almost four months for the competition.”

The PA STEM Competition is only for students in grades 9th-12th. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics. High school students are challenged to select a real-world problem, conduct research, design, build, and present a device that is capable of making life better for citizens of Pennsylvania.

Students were under the direction of Mrs. Simatic, high school math teacher for grades 10th-12th. Mrs. Simatic is the coordinator for the program.

In order to qualify for the program, students must attend all meetings and make a commitment to the team.  There are no drops outs for the team because no replacements are accepted.  The student team must also present before a panel of judges.

Sign ups will be held next year for any interested students.
