What is a veteran? By definition a veteran is someone who has served in the military or had a long experience in a certain  field. To me a veteran is anyone who is or was in a war or signed up for the forces. Everyone knows or sees a veteran everyday weather they know it or not. Veterans blend in with everybody else doing everyday jobs, but they are different and special. They risked their lives for our freedom. The first veterans day was celebrated on November 11 in 1919, but it was not called Veterans Day until 1954.

Some veterans that I know from everyday life are my friends parents or older siblings, but the one that is very personal to me would me my grandfather. My grandfather signed up for the army in 1960 and is now a veteran. Every year on Veterans Day he visits his old army friends, dead and alive, and goes out to enjoy a free dinner. Even though my grandfather did not have to go to war, he is still considered a veteran to me. He still signed up for the army and went through all of the training. No he did not go overseas and fight, but he did fight here. My grandfather is a veteran, my hero, and I am proud of that.

Veterans Day is a day to honor all and every veteran. To do so some restaurants give discount or free meals and parades. Applebee’s Chili’s, Golden Corral, and Texas Roadhouse are just some of the restaurants that are giving all veterans and active-duty military discounts.
