Logs, hill climbing, roots, rocks, jumps, and bumps are all things that a rider will feel while riding a dirtbike but suspension is the key to making the rough obstacles have less of an impact.

While riding through the woods, riders will hit all sorts of obstacles that the rider will really feel in the body and in the bike but having the correct suspension tuning will help. Woods riders often find themselves crossing logs and going over rocks. Correct suspension tuning can make these obstacles require little to no effort. A find tuned woods suspension will help the rider get the front wheel in the air for a log crossing. Being able to preload the front end of the bike to get the front wheel off the ground comes back to tuned suspension. Preloading is an action the rider will do that consists of putting the body weight towards the front, back, or center of the bike and bringing the body weight back up in a fast motion to give the bike a little bounce while hitting an object. Trail riders do this a lot to help get over logs and other tough obstacles. Motocross riders normally call it a seat bounce. A seat bounce is basically the same ting but a motocross rider will preload at the face of a jump and get more air time helping the rider clear the jump. Riders know the preloading will help but it is only possible with a suspension tuned for the perfect performance.

A rider that does not have a suspension that is tuned for a specific type of riding can do a couple of things that will help the rider get over the tough obstacles. The first thing to do would be to learn how to ride the bike with a poorly tuned suspension. Taking the time to learn the soft spots of a poorly tuned suspension will help the rider with the tough obstacles. Trying to tune the suspension will help also. A poorly tuned suspension can be tuned for a specific type of riding. Some riders don’t know how to tune a suspension but going to a local mechanic or possibly the internet will help the rider gain knowledge on suspension tuning.

Suspension is a very important part of a dirtbike. Without it, hitting little bumps would feel like hitting a massive crater. A rider with a poorly tuned suspension can feel the impact throughout the body and the bike will feel it to but having a fine tuned suspension will be easier on both the bike and the body.
